Review of a visit a few weeks ago. I stopped in for some beef. They make an excellent Italian Beef, and I recommend it - good flavor, hot, and fresh. Fries are very good and hot as well! Service is decent. Tommy can be a bit gruff, but seems to always be smiling and enjoying his food creation. Yes, Chicago style hot dogs get mustard and no ketchup, but there are better, more fun ways to tell a customer this. ;-) Drinks are a fun mix of fountain beverages. Good root beer and Green River on self serve tap! Decor is standard for the fare, and cleanliness can be hit or miss. Usually decent, but often a slight greasy film from previous guests not cleaning up completely, or just not being hit with a damp rag. Could use some improvement here when it's outside the lunch rush. If you want to chum up with the owners, I recommend Tommy's, as they can be nice folks. If you want to simply stop in for a dog or burger, it's fair. If you want a good Italian Beef regardless, stop in!

That vanilla milkshake made me do the shake!! Wow, It was delicious! The hotdog was yummy, try 'two' with everything on it! Oh, and I had service with a smile :-) I'll be back! :-)

Hm, at least two bogus reviews here; one from a person who had an issue with getting overcharged (I seem to remember the shakes being about 3 bucks each, not $1.49, still not a bad price for a real shake), and another from a person who didn't even get a chance to eat here since they were closing. News flash: it's a small business. If things are slow, they close up early to save money. To those of you who ate here and didn't like it, well, there's no accounting for bad taste. Maybe the kid who wouldn't touch the cheeseburger is used to McFrankenfood garbage! I've dealt with the owner for years and never had an issue. If he tells you he won't put ketchup on a hot dog, you should heed his advice. It's probably because ketchup on a hot dog is gross and you're a communist for liking it. Really, y'all need to lighten up a touch. Nobody bitches at Jean n' Judes about the no-ketchup thing, and it wasn't too many years ago that they'd throw you out of there even for asking for it, so let's not make Tommy into a super-villain. Anyway, I've eaten at Tommy's lots of times, brought food for my family and my employees from here lots of times, and nobody has ever said anything to me but wow this is good. My personal fave is the chicken parmigiana sandwich. Also, the beef is great and has never been fatty or cold one time. Ignore the haters and go give Tommy's a try. If you don't like the beef, try his sausage!

Pretty good tasting food, but they barely gave me any meat on the cheeseburger. It was all bun. A little too pricey for my liking too. Here, you don't get what you pay for.

"The bank charges you an extra dollar for plastic" he tells me. Terrible business ethics including drink cup sizes.Never pass cc fees on to customers.See a review from 2012 and still does not care /get it. Up charges galore. And all this for chemically tasting milkshakes extra bland and dry beef and Not home cut fries. WOW WOW WOW! That extra dollar is a HUGE long term net loss No repeats and mass multi media honestly awful reviews. I'm experiencing an awful Tummy(tommy) ache still! Rotten lunch experience. zero zero zero one plus(friendly woman owner with cute baby)

To all of you people who are complaining because Tommy's won't put ketchup on your hot dog: please get out of Chicago immediately. You clearly only eat at mass-marketed local hot dog establishments that cater to the lowest common denominator. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, the official trade association based in Washington, DC has established "hot dog etiquette" which dictates that adding ketchup to your hot dog is RUDE if you are not a child. Additionally, Bob Schwartz, a VP of Vienna Beef, the leading Chicago wiener supplier, wrote a book titled "Never Put Ketchup On A Hot Dog" and refers to ketchup as an "affliction". This is well-established and if you don't like it, stay home and put ketchup on your Oscar Meyer. Now, about Tommy's: I like this place. The Philly Cheesesteak is delicious and well-seasoned. I like the mac and cheese bites which are not usually available at a place like this, and they have Green River on tap. The restaurant is immaculate, and the owners/employees are friendly.

I really wanted to like this place because it was not a chain and looked like a good mom and pop place. For its namesake to have Italian Beef in the name you'd expect that the emphasis would be on great Italian beef--that was not the case here. The beef sandwiches first off are almost 9 bucks! There is more bread than beef and the bread tasted stale along with the beef. I asked for my beef to be dunked and it wasn't (as if they were skimping in the au jus as well..wth?? Anyway, it's too bad because the lady behind the counter was super nice and the man who made the beef was also very friendly. But come on folks...go to Al's or Mr Beef or Portillos for that matter and see how it's really done. This is tip that the owners should follow so they can get it right. Unfortunately, I don't come this way very often and I certainly won't go out of my way for stale skimpy Italian beef.

We've been going to Tommy's for years. Hands down, this is the best "quick bite" option in the area. They serve classic fare like chargrilled burgers, Chicago-style hot dogs, fresh wraps and REALLY GOOD Italian beef and sausage. Also their fries are always perfectly crispy and fresh tasting (some places use old oil which is a total turn off). Their milkshakes are the real deal and they serve Green River, too. The owners are always super friendly and appreciate our business.

Being big fans of Italian beef, we thought we would give this place a try since the reviews were mixed. We had their Italian Beef sandwich and Meatball Sandwich and Chocolate Shake. The shake was pretty good, but the Italian beef was definitely sub-par. Pretty tasteless and we thought that they had either used old beef or cheap. The Meatball was a little better, but definitely nothing to write home about. I would recommend avoiding this place and going to one of the better known places in Chicago.

I wanted to try this place. Heard they had a good philly cheesesteak (can't find a good one).. Couldn't get in. Went there at 7:00 p.m. The hours say open until 8:00. The door was locked. There was someone inside. He waved me off as if I was a gnat. I pointed to my watch. Again with the insect waving. Hang a sign: "closing early... sorry". Come out and tell me there was an emergency. Shoot, hang a sign that says: sorry, exhausted. Need a night off. Too bad. Now I'll never know. Must be nice to not need business.

Hands down the best Italian sausage I have ever had! The beef is excellent, too. However, the sausage is so good, I can't help but order that every time I go to Tommy's. If you haven't tried it, you don't know what you are missing!! I think some of the other reviewers are confused about the place they are reviewing because the servi ce has always been super friendly! I highly suugest you give this place a try! As for the one complaining about being overcharged for milkshakes... I am looking at their menu right now and it is $3 for a small and $4.50 for a large. I don't know where you came up with $1.49.

Avoid this place at any and all costs! I'm not sure if they are inexperienced or what, but when I placed an order for a combo I received a beef sandwich that was mostly fat and sausage that was undercooked and still cold. I ended up throwing out my food and taking my business elsewhere. If you want a good Italian beef go either to Jay's, Johnnies, or a different place of your choice. Avoid Tommies!

The owner has no personality and is kind of rude. What keeps me going back, the food. Have never been disappointed. The dollar for Credit Card use is crazy talk. Again, the food is really good.

Never again eating here. Absolutely worst place I know. Now don't get me wrong, the food here is pretty good, it's the STAFF that makes this a one-star restaurant. There is one female worker there. I'm not sure what her name is, but she's currently dating the owner of the place. This obviously means she can do what she wants whenever she wants. Both my friends and I got ripped off multiple times by this chick. And when I say "ripped-off," I mean she charges you however much she feels like. SHe charged me $13 for 4 shakes priced at $1.49 each. Upon realizing she charge me $7 extra, I asked for my money back whilst showing my receipt. She just point blank told me that that wasn't a receipt from today. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! You just saw me order 3 minutes ago! So it's safe to say that until her boss fires that chick, NO ONE I know will be eating here again.

Horrible chicken sandwich. Old lettuce. Brusque servers. Asked for an "iced tea," they handed over a cup. No iced tea. Drank diet coke instead. Didn't bother to complain. Knew what would happen.

I've tried to eat here a few times but they were closed early for new-baby issues, which I totally understand but I would seriously think about having some help to keep the doors open when you're not there.

I'm new to the region and so I don't have deeply emotional expectations for Italian beef. And I've only been to Tommy's once, but came away pretty darned happy. The interior is bare but tidy and clean. Looks like a family business. I ordered the 7" beef with hot peppers and cheese; my accomplice got the half sizer. There must have been 4 people behind the counter -- the labor was all set. The food came out quickly and the first thing I noticed was that the bread was outstanding: super-fresh, liked it was from dough that had aged for a day and had been baked an hour earlier. I really have no idea how it was actually procured, but it just didn't taste like it had been yanked from a bag that arrived a few days ago. The second thing I noticed was that, geez, I had just finished eating my sandwich. Yum, how did that happen?? The menu is large in a counter-diner sort of way and I didn't pay much attention to it because I was all fixated on the Italian beef listed at the top. The only other Italian beef I've had was at Portillo's. That was good and cheap, but I'd be inclined to head back to Tommy's first.

Wow, I'm actually shocked to see this place as 2 stars. Well then again, maybe not too shocked. Not sure. I guess I'll base my opinion on the food only because I had very little interaction with the owner or employees. But I think there is a little bit of oversensitivity with some of these reviews on the employees. Anyways, "greasy spoon" type places are all over the place. If you grew up in Chicago or the 'burbs then you eaten at one, and probably had a favorite one. Based on a recommendation from a friend, I went to Tommy's. The recommendation went something like this, "you got to eat here, he grinds his own chuck for the burgers and roasts his own Italian Beef". First of all, if you are going to eat at a greasy spoon, why not a place that does it himself? Rather than the crap prepackaged stuff you can get anywhere. Burger was seasoned well, moist, and the bun was perfect. The Italian beef I tried as well (not the biggest fan) but also wanted to try the homemade. I got the combo (beef/sausage) which included a very good Italian sausage that had a pungent fennel seasoning to it. All washed down with a Green River soda from the tap.

I saw this place in an article published in the Daily Herald. Let me just say it is the best food I have ever had. They make the Italian beef and sausage. What better than a homemade COMBO. The soup i had was also homemade. Cream OF Mushroom, Nice cozy place inside (very clean) Will seat About 25-30 people at tables. My buddy had the philly cheese steak sandwich. It was great. I have been to philly and they were not this good. Try it out. I Know that you will not be disapointed.
